St. Augustine, Fla. (Sept. 13, 2018) Betty Griffin Center has raised nearly $60,000 in efforts to obtain $100,000 by December 31 in additional funding through a one-to-one matching grant awarded by the Delores Barr Weaver Fund.
The Delores Barr Weaver Fund will match up to $100,000 given by new donors, current donors who increase their gifts to the nonprofit organization – along with previous funders who have not donated to the center since March 1, 2015.
“Hundreds of women, children and their family members who are victims of domestic and sexual violence in St. Johns County turn to Betty Griffin Center for shelter, counseling and other support to survive the trauma and move on with their lives each year,” Weaver said. “This is one of many deserving organizations in our area that is improving and even saving lives in our community every day.”
Betty Griffin Center CEO Joyce Mahr says donations received through the matching grant will be used to fund the emergency shelter, the rape care unit at Flagler Hospital, counseling and educational programming, child advocates and many other critical programs.
“Obtaining the challenge grant gives each donor the opportunity to double the amount of their gift while doubling their impact in providing immediate and life-saving services to survivors and their families. Mahr said. “We have seen a significant increase in over 50 percent in services provided and the shelter and transitional housing continue to remain over capacity. This has put a strain on our budget, so this grant is essential in enabling us to continue to help the growing number of victims of domestic and sexual abuse in our community.”
