How do I help?

To help your friend or loved one who you think may be in danger, consider the following:

  • Believe the survivor and take the accusations of abuse seriously.
  • Recognize that survivors may not realize they are in danger.
  • Remain neutral as the survivor may need your support in the future.
  • Understand that an abuser generally devalues and control’s their partner’s sense of reality.
  • Respect the survivor’s decisions and be non-judgmental.
  • Provide the survivor with contact information for an advocate through our 24-hour help line (904) 824-1555 or through the national center (800) 799-7233.
  • Be there for your friend or loved one.
