St. Augustine, Fla. (Dec. 12, 2022) – Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) completed upgrades as part of its Nonprofit Energy Makeover community outreach program at the Betty Griffin Center. FPL worked with the Betty Griffin Center team to identify energy efficiency upgrades that will help the organization lower its energy usage and save money.
“We are honored to support partners like the Betty Griffin Center who do so much for our community, and we’re excited to celebrate with them the energy efficiency upgrades made,” said Carol Saviak, external affairs manager at FPL. “Helping the Betty Griffin Center lower its energy usage also helps them lower their energy costs, which then allows them to do even more in support of the women and children in our community.”
The energy efficiency upgrades were completed at the shelter and transitional housing apartments. Changes include a new air conditioning unit, 11 new programmable thermostats and LED lighting fixture upgrades throughout the facility – all totaling more than $10,000. A Nonprofit Energy Makeover typically provides approximately $400-1,200 savings per year.
Through its Nonprofit Energy Makeover program, FPL works with nonprofit organizations throughout Florida whose facilities benefit from energy efficiency upgrades and sends in energy experts to make recommendations and complete the upgrades funded by FPL. The upgrades help lower the organization’s energy usage, which can help them save money on their bill.
“We are grateful for the opportunity to receive the nonprofit energy makeover from FPL,” said Kelly Franklin, MSW, chief operating officer at the Betty Griffin Center. “Our mission is to help survivors of domestic and sexual violence navigate through their life-changing traumas to live fulfilling lives on their terms by providing a safe and secure shelter. This helps us improve our shelter location with energy efficient upgrades, but also save money on our bills to assist adults and children in other ways by providing necessary resources such as legal assistance, financial counseling and other critical services.”
In the spirit of the holiday season, FPL also donated items such as blankets, sheets and pillowcases to their annual holiday drive that will be provided to shelter residents to enjoy.
The Betty Griffin Center offers protection and quality services at no cost to survivors of domestic and sexual abuse and their children. They operate a 54-bed emergency shelter, six transitional apartments and provide outreach services, programs, and education throughout St. Johns County, Florida.
